Title:  Scouting & Transaction Lead, Scouting & Transaction (Primary Focus IO/TPD)

Purpose and Scope

Involvement in internal discussions on R&D strategy and portfolio strategy, and alignment with relevant leaders such as Primary Focus Lead and R&D Functional Unit Head
• Development of business development (“BD”) strategy based on above
• Exploration of external research, technologies and assets that fit with, and may contribute to, Astellas’ strategy as potential BD targets
• Collaboration with relevant internal functions such as Corporate Strategy on evaluations of such BD targets
• Overall management for due diligence and negotiation of BD deals
• Management of venture investment activities in light of long-term pipeline strategy
• Enhancement of Astellas BD's presence in the Chinese biopharmaceutical sector.

Role and Responsibilities

• Supports Heads of Scouting & Transaction (Primary Focus Immuno-Oncology, Targeted Protein Degradation, Genetic Regulation, Blindness & Regeneration, and other prioritized areas of CSP2026) in representing Astellas BD in front of external partners/stakeholders, especially in networking and scouting efforts
• Takes principal roles in the following activities:
1. Build strong relationship and partnership with potential target companies to better understand the evolution of their technology, and make Astellas ready for strategic steps
2. Search and monitor emerging programs and/or data readouts in seeking potential BD targets and propose to the cross functional team to take any action.
3. Conduct initial screening of identified potential opportunities, make contact with target companies, and obtain non-confidential information for initial review
4. Manage deeper evaluation (incl. scientific and technical due diligence), develop term sheets and contracts, and present appropriate information for management approvals including EC/SWIFT processes
5. Negotiate the term sheets and contracts and execute deals in a competitive and reputational approach

Required Qualifications:

• Reports to: Head of Scouting & Transaction (PF IO, TPD)
• Supervisory Responsibility: none
• 10+ years of experiences in biopharma industry, academia and/or venture capital, with at least 5 years of experiences in BD / Corporate Strategy or Corporate Planning or alike
• Deep understanding of the innovation ecosystem for emerging science / technologies in connection to corporate strategies (Focus Area strategy and Portfolio strategy)
• Robust skill in presentation, written communication and negotiation in English and Chinese
• Ability to network and accomplish tasks within a multi-cultural environment
• Observed strength and expertise in working within matric teams, including cross-cultural teams and of influencing without authority. Should have an understanding or experience of working with a broad range of functions including commercial, R&D, finance and legal.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced degree (MBA/MS/PharmD/PhD/JD)
• Business-related qualification (CPA/CMA/CFA)
• Knowledge and/or ability to comprehend specific business matters relating to BD projects, e.g. financial model, financial/accounting/tax matters, IP matters, legal/contract matters etc.
• Experience or knowledge in VC or PE firms engaged in healthcare sector
• High quality external network in major biopharma companies, biotech companies, consultants and investment banks
