Purpose and Scope

Medical standards and excellence lead is responsible for the coordination and quality oversight between affiliates in the region in support of the overall field medical strategy and business objectives.

Under the guidance of the Head, Medical Standards & Excellence for the region, the role is to supports strategic and operational direction on external engagement and related systems in conjunction with global initiatives. This role will implement a consistent approach to Field Medical onboarding, training and performance management in the region.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Supports strategy and implements a regional Field Medical (FM) ecosystem including FM Training, Onboarding, Career Development Framework, Performance Management Culture, and Compliance
  • Provides a strategic vision in shaping the FM organization, including implementation of solutions that improve FM operational excellence and enhancing the satisfaction of customer experiences
  • Leads initiatives such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system implementation, FM performance management dashboards and KPIs, FM onboarding/training, FM career development framework and MSL planning process.
  • Oversees the implementation of the on-boarding and ongoing medical training of FM staff
  • Works with MA Training, and key regional and global stakeholders to develop and implement processes and standards for Medical Excellence related activities and identifies medical excellence training needs and implements solutions to meet such needs.
  • Provides operational support, advice and quality assurance to the medical department on HCP fee for service activities, and acts as the regional point on related systems (e.g. VEM).
  • Represents the region on all relevant Medical Standards & Excellence initiatives/taskforce teams.
  • Interfaces effectively with local medical leadership team and regional operations to maximize operational excellence.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability and fully comply with Astellas Group Code of Conduct and associated policies and procedures and other applicable laws, codes and regulations. Proactively clarify and seek guidance as required, and raise any concerns, in a timely manner, with relevant manager, which may include reference to the Ethics and Compliance Team and/or Ethics and Compliance Helpdesk.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in science or health-related field required. Functional expertise in an area of medical affairs.
  • 5 plus years of experience as MSL (MSL, Medical Advisor, MSL/Medical Advisor Manager preferred).
  • Experience of managing Field Medical related systems (e.g. Veeva solutions) and have a good understanding of systems
  • Developed and implemented successful strategies and programs for various products and/or processes.
  • Worked with people in a complex, changing environment to deliver value-added results to the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience of effectively working across multiple countries.
  • Fluent in English language - written & verbal.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a corporate operating philosophy and operate within company policies and procedures, and to successfully function within a commercial environment.

  • Understanding of the drug development process 
  • Understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and the regulatory and reimbursement systems
  • Expertise in Code of Conducts as they apply to key medical functions
  • Additional language skills (e.g. Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese etc)
